Streptomy

Sample type:

Inserts a swab into mouth and rubs it against the back of throat and tonsils

Uses:

Detects streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin at or below US safe levels.

Precaution:

Avoid using mouthwash before the test because it can interfere with results.

Interfering factors:

Bactericidal activity.

Pre analytical errors:

a) Missing sample and/or test request,

b) Wrong or missing identification,

c) Contamination from infusion route

Corrective action:

  1. Rapid test for diagnosis

  2. Test accuracy

  3. Safety

  4. Cost effectiveness

Post analytical errors:

  1. Not mentioning sample type, whether it was a nasal or throat swab in reports.

  2. Delay in reporting
