Sample type:

Uses:

  • Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell. In fact, most of the white blood cells that lead the immune system’s response are neutrophils.

  • An absolute neutrophil count (ANC) can provide your doctor with important clues about your health. An ANC is typically ordered as part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential. A CBC measures the cells that are in your blood.

Precautions:

  • Avoid smoking cigarettes or sniffing tobacco for 3 days before the test

  • Avoid high stress level before the test

  • Avoid excessive exercise before the test

  • Don’t steroid medication before the test

Interfering Factors:

  • A recent infection

  • Chemotherapy

  • Radiation therapy

  • Corticosteroid therapy

  • Recent surgery

  • Anxiety

  • HIV

Pre analytical errors:

  1. Inappropriate specimen received.

  2. Unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label.

  3. Specimen received after prolonged delay (usually more than 72 hours);

  4. Specimen received in expired transport container.

Corrective action:

  1. Appropriate specimen received.

  2. Labeled specimen and no name discrepancy between specimen and request label.

  3. Specimen received without delay.

  4. Specimen received in valid transport container.

Post analytical errors:

  1. Failure in reporting.

  2. Erroneous validation of analytical data.

  3. Improper data entry.

Corrective action:

  1. Write correct report.

  2. All analytical data should be valid.

  3. Proper data entry.

Reference range:

  • 2,500 and 7,000 neutrophils per microliter of blood.
