PHOSPHOLIPIDS
Sample type
Serum
Uses
There are a number of disease states for which phospholipid analysis may be desirable, including obstructive jaundice, Tangier disease, beta-or hypobetalipoproteinemia, and lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase deficiency.
Phospholipid analysis rarely provides added beneficial information in cases of dyslipoproteinemia.
Precautions
Patient should fast for 12 to 14 hours.
Interfering factors
This procedure measures lecithin, sphingomyelin, and lysolecithin phospholipids. It does not measure kephalin.
Pre-analytical errors
- Specimen not serum
The corrective action
The sample must be rejected and another sample be obtained.
- Gross hemolysis, mislabeled or unlabeled specimens
The corrective action
The sample must be rejected and another sample be obtained
Post-analytical errors
I. reports were sent to the incorrect patient
The corrective action
communication with patient, apologizing for the error, and providing him with the correct report
