1-Investigating pancreatic disorders, usually pancreatitis
2-More specific for pancreatitis than is for serum amylase; diagnosis of peritonitis,strangulated or infarcted bowel, pancreatic cyst.
Precautions
stop eating or drinking anything other than water for 8 to 12 hours beforehand
Interferring factor
1-Certain drugs such as cholinergics and opiates may elevate serum lipase.
2-Renal disease may elevate the serum lipase
Pre analytical errors
Some disease and medications affect lipase concentration.
Corrective action
Taking history of patient disease and drugs he used
Post analytical errors
1- Write another patient’s name on the report

Make sure you write the correct name on the report
2-Writing a wrong result in the report
The corrective action
If the report is not delivered to the patient and this error is discovered the correct result must be written, but if the report is delivered to the patient, must communicate with him and tell him that an error has occurred and replace the report with the report in which there is the correct result .
Reference range
adults younger than 60 is 10 to 140 U/L.
adults ages 60 and older is 24 to 151 U
