Uses: -

1- Diagnosis of and monitoring therapeutic response in CAH due to 11 &bgr; -hydroxylase deficiency.

2- Assessment of adrenal response in the metyrapone test; result after metyrapone stimulation is greater than 8000 ng/dL.

3- Evaluate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and pituitary ACTH reserve.

Precaution: -

No isotopes administered 24 hours prior to venipuncture.

Interfere factor: -

Patients with myxedema, some pregnant patients, and those on oral contraceptives respond poorly during the test.

Pre analytical error: -

Citrate plasma specimen; improper labeling.

Corrective action: -

Serum sample should be used.

Check for labeling.

Post analytical error: -

Reports were sent to the incorrect patient

Corrective action: -

Communicate with patient, apologizing for the error, and providing him with the correct report.
